Effective interpersonal communication

Target

The goal of this course is mastering effective style of communication, practical diagnosis of communication barriers and building supportive and effective relations in the team.

Requirements

The course is addressed to everyone who wants to discover secrets of the process of communication in order to successfully read and convey information, have conversations, work in teams and convince others to one’s ideas.

1. Introduction to the aspects of communication

  • The phenomenon of communication – is communication the same as information?
  • Communication barriers – what makes the biggest problems in communication?
  • Stages of communication process
  • Techniques and tools of effective communication
  • Meaning of verbal and nonverbal communication
  • The role of communication in the life of individual and of the group

2. Communication as a tool of achieving the aim of the team and of the company

  • Errors and barriers in communication
  • Stages of developing an interpersonal contact
  • Rules of providing feedback
  • Active listening
  • Styles of communication
  • Direct communication vs. telephone communication
  • New methods of communication (e-mail, video conferences, live-meetings)
  • Communication networks and models of information flow within organization

3. Effective conversation

  • Shaping the image of the sender and the receiver of the message
  • Factors that influence the quality of professional contacts between employees
  • Active listening  as a tool of successful communication
  • Factors that disturb listening and understanding of message
  • The art of asking questions
  • Psychological mechanisms and techniques of exercising influence

4. Assertive behaviors in communication

What is assertiveness? – the concept of assertiveness

  • Unassertive behaviors and their consequences
  • Diagnosis of one’s assertiveness – when do you decide to be assertive
  • Formulating “I” communicates as a basis of assertive way of expressing opinions, judgments and emotions
  • Assertive reaction to criticism
  • Assertive confrontation of beliefs
  • Types of behavior: aggressive, submissive, assertive
  • Why are we afraid to say “no” – what restrains us
  • Self-evaluation as an outcome of assertive treatment of oneself

5. Influence vs. manipulation

  • Ability to refuse and accepting refusal
  • Ability of argumentation

  • Accepting negative and positive evaluation, reacting on the forms of critique

6. One’s personal style on communication – practical workshop

  • Identification of the style of communication

  • Stimulation methods (brain storm, case study, snowball sampling, simulation games, debate, round table method, psychological game);
  • Various working methods – in groups, pairs, individual, in front of the class;
  • Additional visual aids (movies, presentations)
